BURLINGTON PRIMARY CARE SERVICES
New Patient Medical Check
All new patients joining the Practice will be asked to have a new patient medical appointment with our Health Care Assistant. This appointment is used to introduce you to the practice and to obtain important data and perform routine health checks which are important to begin planning your health care at BPC.
Maternity Medical Services
This is provided by all Doctors. Our Community midwifes work with us and run ante-natal clinics in the surgery. We always involve the mother when deciding on the most suitable place to have her baby. After the delivery the midwife will visit mother and baby at home. Patient Information Leaflets are given to all patients booking for maternity services.
Contraception Services
The surgery provides the full range of such services and all doctors provide contraceptive advice. Dr. McElhinney and Dr Alimeta can fit IUDs (coils) including Mirena. Dr. Holloway and Dr. Alimeta can fit Implanon (contraceptive rods/implants) assisted by Cathy Leete – Practice Nurse. Dr. Lelijveld does not personally provide emergency contraception ( Morning After Pill), but will arrange for you to see another Doctor if required.
After you have had your initial appointment and assessment with the Doctor regarding contraception, you can make future appointments with the Practice Nurses who will take over the monitoring of your contraception. They will provide your repeat prescription for oral contraception (the pill) or contraceptive injections during this consultation.
Child Health Surveillance
All Doctors are approved for this. We aim to see babies in their first 12 days. There are also two key developmental checks at six to eight weeks postnatal and age three and half to four and half years, before they start school. These check are usually done by a Doctor at the same time as your child is recalled for vaccinations. Regular assessments are offered by our Health Visitors.
Minor Surgery
A range of minor surgical procedures are available at the surgery. All the Doctors are approved to under take them.
Well Woman Clinic
Invitations are sent for cervical smears to women aged between 20 – 65 every 3 years. At this time we take the opportunity to offer routine checks for health promotion. This includes exploring any concerns you may have about your general health, your family history, or your smoking, drinking and exercise habits. The nurse will measure your height, weight and blood pressure. Please bring a urine sample to the appointment for other routine checks. Your smear result will be sent to you in writing from the local health authority.
A reminder will be sent to you automatically when your next smear is due.
Well Man Clinic
You should have a well man check every five years and appointments are available for any age. At this appointment with Nurse will discuss your general health, your family history, or your smoking, drinking and exercise habits. She will measure your height, weight and blood pressure and check your urine.
Menopause and HRT Clinic
Diabetic Clinic
Some doctors and nurses at the practice have had extra training in diabetes and run diabetic clinics.
Patients managed solely by the practice are sent appointments for a full check annually and an interim six months review. When you are invited to clinic you will also receive an appointment to have blood tests 2 weeks before. It is important to have these tests even if you have recently had other tests done. When you have attended a nurse led clinic your notes will be sent to a doctor for checking.
Asthma/COPD Clinic
The Nurse helps with assessment and treatment of asthma and provides information. We have a Spirometry machine to aid the diagnosis of chronic lung conditions. All these patients are invited into surgery once a year for a review.
CHD Clinic
Long term management of patients with heart disease is being supported by the Nurse led clinic. Your Doctor will arrange for the Nurse to follow you up and monitor your condition if you have heart disease. When you are invited to clinic you will also receive an appointment to have blood tests 2 weeks before. It is important to have these tests even if you have recently had other tests done. When you have attended a nurse led clinic your notes will be sent to a doctor for checking.
Hypertension ( High Blood Pressure) and Stroke Clinics
Long term management of patients with Hypertension is being supported by the Nurse led clinic. Your Doctor will arrange for the Nurse to follow you up and monitor your condition if you have Hypertension. When you are invited to clinic you will also receive an appointment to have blood tests 2 weeks before. It is important to have these tests even if you have recently had other tests done. When you have attended a nurse led clinic your notes will be sent to a doctor for checking.
Smoking Cessation Clinic
You can refer yourself or you may find your Doctor encourages you to book for this clinic. The Nurse has had extra training in helping people quit smoking and our clinic has been proved to increase your chances of quitting. Certain aids to stopping smoking are available on NHS prescription (patches, tablets etc.) but you must attend the Smoking Cessation Clinic to obtain them. Your doctor cannot prescribe them in a normal clinic.
Immunisation Clinics
For the Childhood Vaccination Programme routine appointments at the surgery are sent by the Health Authority when your child's vaccinations are due.
For overseas travel please ask the receptionist who will be able to get you an appointment in the Travel Clinic, where you will receive not just immunisation but advice on how to stay healthy abroad. It is best to check at least two months before travel so that any vaccinations can be completed in time. Minor Injury Service
During our opening hours 08.00-18.30 we provide a minor injury service for the following:-
- Cuts/grazes and lacerations
- Sprains and strains
- Bites/stings
- Infected Wounds
- Minor head injuries
- Minor eye infections, foreign bodies and scratches
- Minor scalds and burns
- Bruises
If we are unable to treat the condition we will refer you onto the Minor Injury Clinic or the local A & E department.
